The Inn of Nowhere attempts to document two-time Grammy Award winner St Vincent, aka Annie Erin Clark. St. Vincent sets out to film his life with "director" and friend Carrie Brownstein ( Portlandia , Sleater-Kinney) in what turns out to be a parody of the documentary when Annie is unable to marry her stage character with her real life. Pushed to spice things up a bit for the film, Annie transforms into someone else all together, even making a sex tape with Dakota Johnson with camera work tasks taken on by an uncomfortable Brownstein. “I wanted people to know who I really am,” Clark said in an on-camera interview for The Inn of Nowhere , cut between scenes of Western shootings and other surreal imagery. “One of the reasons I wanted to make a documentary in the first place was that I would finally be in control of the narrative. … A small part of me was starting to question myself. All I can say is that somewhere along the way things got terribly wrong. "
The official synopsis for IFC Films reads: “From real-life friends Annie Clark (aka Grammy Award - winning recording and touring artist Saint-Vincent ) and Carrie Brownstein ( Portlandia , Sleater -Kinney) is the metafictional tale of two creative forces united to make a documentary about the music of St. Vincent, his life on tour and his character on stage. But they quickly discover unpredictable forces hidden in the subject and the filmmaker that threaten to derail the friendship, the project and the creative life of the duo. "
Clark describes it this way. “To use a sports metaphor, once the performers and performers were the football players, and the rest of us would watch from the stands. Now we are all on the ground.
